In conversation with Markku Tuominen
Markku Tuominen has been the beating heart of Lindström for 37 years and currently serves as the sales and business manager. Markku’s responsibilities include tasks that develop sales and improve customer experience. His workplace is Hollola, part of the Southeast Finland profit unit.
In April, Markku transitioned to part-time retirement and now works in two-week cycles. After a two-week retirement period, it has always been a joy to return to work, where amazing colleagues continue to foster an excellent level of comfort for him.
Markku’s career at Lindström began as an industrial towel service salesperson, and along the way, he has tried all sorts of things, including managerial duties. Recruitment processes have changed tremendously over the course of 37 years. Markku reminisced with a smile, “37 years ago, I called Lindström on a Friday morning and expressed my interest in a job. That same afternoon, I got an interview at the Hämeenlinna office, and the following Monday, I learned that I had been selected for a job at Lindström.
Good leadership is everything
Markku appreciates many things about Lindström as an employer, such as flexibility, reliability, open discussion, and advancement opportunities. Lindström has enabled the development of professional knowledge, the possibility of moving between departments, and equal treatment of its personnel. The company continuously develops its employees, which has benefitted Markku in his managerial duties. Investing in managerial work year by year has made work easier for both managers and rank-and-file personnel.
The company evolves with the rest of the world
Markku says he is proud of how the company has developed over the years and how its responsibility values align with his own. When a company’s values align with one’s own, one can be proud of their work and carry it out every day with their head held high. According to Markku Tuominen, the days when going to work hasn’t felt good can be counted on one hand. Good team spirit between different departments and open discussions have helped tackle new challenges at Lindström.
People are the top priority
In addition to Markku’s daily work tasks, daily interactions with his team make the workdays great. With his team, he can discuss both work and personal matters. Work has always been an important part of Markku’s life, which is why he values good contacts and interactions very much. Sales work has been a great place to get a behind-the-scenes look at various events. Markku highlights resilience and adaptability as key aspects of working at Lindström. The world has changed a lot during Markku’s 37-year career, and the journey has included both bad and good changes. Resilience and the ability to adapt to new things have helped build a career, create networks, and navigate through changes.
Time management helps a lot in Markku’s work
Markku fondly recalls, “I have never been late for a customer meeting, thanks to excellent time management skills.” This skill has also allowed him to allocate time for leisure activities. Markku emphasises that perseverance is another essential trait for anyone who wants to succeed in sales. Sales work is not always straightforward, and perseverance helps navigate even the most challenging situations.
Markku appreciates Lindström’s development over the years, its long history, and the company’s sense of responsibility. The level of customer demands has always been high and will continue to rise. “If products and services are not at the right level, the company does not even get a chance to make an offer,” he emphasises. Creating an excellent customer experience is an essential part of both sales and maintaining the company’s image.
