Lindström launches one of Estonia’s largest water recycling projects
Lindström and the Estonian technology company Spacedrip have launched a smart water recycling system at Lindström’s service centre in Kohila. The new system will enable the purification and reuse of up to 25,000 cubic metres of water annually. This makes it one of the largest industrial water recycling projects in Estonia.
Once fully operational, the Kohila facility will be able to reuse 70% of the water generated during its production processes.
The water recycling system significantly reduces the reliance on clean groundwater. It enables Lindström to expand its operations without increasing total water consumption. The water recovery technology is based on a bioreactor in which water is purified by microbes. Automatic filters and a control system support the biological process and monitor water quality in real time.
“The investment secures both the sustainability of our water usage and the continuity of operations, even in the face of rising water prices or infrastructure challenges. It is a step toward more environmentally friendly processes and a contribution to the local community. Water consumption will be significantly reduced, easing pressure on groundwater and helping to safeguard local jobs,” says Roland Raud, Managing Director of Lindström Estonia.
Towards smarter water management across Estonia
Joonatan Oras, CEO of Spacedrip, explained that water scarcity is a growing problem worldwide. ‘Every third person in the world faces water shortages. In Estonia, we also need to think about how to use water more wisely,’ he says, adding that water reuse can help alleviate the problem. Oras added that Lindström is one of the first large water-consuming industries to adopt the above-mentioned technology developed in Estonia. The system helps both to increase resource efficiency and reduce costs.
“Spacedrip water reuse technology is the solution for all industrial companies that are committed to sustainability and environmental performance. The water coming from this system is cleaner than the water coming from the tap. Thanks to the fully automatic solution, it is relatively easy to maintain,” says Hardi Tammis, Head of Operations at Lindström Estonia. He encourages other companies to think about water reuse and stresses that the investment will help achieve the 2030 resource efficiency targets much faster.
“We aim to make similar investments in the Tartu and Loo service centres. Our vision is that smart water management will become the norm, not the exception, in the circular economy,” added Raud.
